Musical life.

The Roman rock scene is not very passionate and focuses on imported stars performing in front of a large audience. In summer, local bands sometimes play for free in the squares, but the element here is rather jazz, played in numerous venues in a wide variety of styles.

The Latin music scene is also flourishing. Most clubs are unfortunately closed in July and August, and sometimes longer; should also be remembered, that in addition to admission, a membership fee is paid. Drinks, on the other hand, aren't more expensive than your average bar.

As for other genres of music, this opera house remained in the shadow of Milan for a long time, but now it is gaining more and more rank; while classical music can be heard in a number of halls throughout the city, as well as during a series of concerts organized in churches.

Rock i pop

Caffe Latino, via Monte Testaccio 96. A club with a varied program in the recently fashionable area of ​​the Protestant cemetery. Filmy, cartoons and cabaret, a variety of live music. Most interesting at weekends, when there is crowd and atmosphere.

Folk studio, via G. Sacks 3 (5892374). Affordable club in Trastevere, where mostly folk and blues are played. July-August closed.

Forte Prenestino, via Delpino 14. Anarachist club in an illegally seized building in the eastern suburbs. Rock, alternative movies and events, most for free. Program on posters. Buses no 14, nr 19, nr 516.

Night Gray, via dei Fienaroli 30b (• 5813249). Lots of electronics and live jazz, salsa, poetry recitals and arcade room.

Melvyn s, via Politeama 8 (• 5813300). Roman bands of all kinds of music play every night in this popular bar in Trastevere. Open until 4.00. Nd.zamkn.

palace. Huge sports arena in EUR, where, as a rule, there are great stars visiting Rome. Terrible acoustics and usually crowded. Metro line B or bus no 93 z Termini.

Planet Tent, Viale de Coubertin. One of the two permanent concert stages under the tent, where mainly locally famous Italian groups are found, and sometimes there are folk performances and festivals. Bus no 95 from Piazza Venezia or tram no 19.

Striped Curtain, via Cristofo Colombo 393 (5410196). The second of the tents, mid-size stage for non-mainstream bands, both Italian and foreign. Bus no 93.

Uonna Club, via Cassia 871. Well out of town, but more eccentric bands play here, with a sharp punk flair- Foreign cult bands, and from Roman, if not the best, it is certainly the most original.

Jazz and Latin music

Alexanderplatz, via Ostia 9 (3599398). Club-restaurant, always a decent program, free admission, unless there are stars. Membership card for three months 3000 L. Mon closed.

Big Mama s, Vicolo San Francesco a Ripa 18 (582551). A jazz and blues club in Trastevere with a long tradition and a new program every evening. Membership 5000 L; introduction 10-20000 L. VII-X castle.

Billie Holiday. A small club with interesting local bands or less known guests from abroad. Jam sessions on Sunday afternoon. Membership 2000 L; introduction 10-20000 L with the first drink for free. Open Thu-Sun. late.

Blatumba, Square in Piscinula 20 (6054810). Small, inviting clubhouse with an authentic Latin program. Big crowd on Fridays and weekends. Open from 22.00 late. Mon closed. 10000 L with the first drink.

The charango, via Sant Onofrio 28 (6879908). Currently the best of the Latin clubs, so many immigrants from South America come here.

Fonclea, via Crescenzio 82a (65303020). A club with a long tradition, jazz i salsa, usually live.

Luna, via dei Salumi 3 (5817332). Chaotic mix of African music, Latin American, "Happenings", cabaret and movies. It's usually full of ex-punks and posers in bow ties.

Music Inn, Largo dei Fiorentini 3 (6544934). The legendary club of Rome (the oldest in town) in a smoky basement. Music still lives up to expectations, and the prices are reasonable. Membership 5000 L; 10-20000 L. Open Thu.-Sun., VII-IX zamkn.

Saint Louis, via del Cardello 13a (4745076). A modern club known for good music. Free entrance, but you pay for the first drink 3000 L. Closed on Tuesdays and VII-Pol. IX.

Saxophone beans, via Germanico 26 (•380047). The atmosphere and inn prices, with live jazz from 20.00 on Wed, pt. i nd.

Journalist Jazz Club, Alley of the Neophytes 13a (• 6783237). Intimate, pleasant and multicultural, with jazz, bluesy, poetry, traditional and regional music, sometimes also regional dishes. We recommend. Membership 2000 L; introduction 10000 L.

Yes! Brazil, via San Francesco a Ripa 103 (5817332). Bar with Brazilian service and live Latin music every evening.

Classical music and opera

There are quite a lot of places in summer, where you can listen to classical music. Not counting concerts on the occasion of the L Estate Romana summer festival, Roman churches offer a large selection of choral concerts, chamber and organ, which are widely advertised, and admission is usually free. There are also sponsored concert series on Sunday morning, the most famous of which are Alitalia at the Teatro Brancaccio, via Merulana 244 i Italcable w Sistina Theater, via Sistina 129 (•4756841). It's best to buy tickets during the week, but in the morning before the concert there should be people, who quit. The autumn music festival in Villa Doria Pamphili organized by the city authorities is of a similar nature, via Aurelia Antica 183, you can also enter concerts broadcast by RAI from Foro Italico.

Academy of Santa Cecilia (*6541044) throughout the year, it plays a key role in the organization of musical life in the city, performing with their own concerts or inviting other orchestras. In the winter season, concerts are held at via dei Greci 18 (• 6783996), but there are also recitals in the summer, often with world-famous performers, in Piazza del Campidoglio. The Roman opera scene is centered around the Teatro dell Opera on the corner of via Torino and Piazza Beniamino Gigli (461755), from November to May.
